In a significant stride towards regional development, the Senate has passed the Bill for the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), drawing commendations from Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu. Sponsored by Kalu himself, the legislation aims to address the longstanding infrastructural deficits in the South East region, particularly in the aftermath of the civil war.

Following unanimous approval in the House of Representatives late last year, the Bill underwent thorough consideration in the Senate, culminating in its passage at the Committee of the Whole, chaired by Senate President Sen. Godswill Akpabio. Deputy Speaker Kalu, expressing gratitude for the Senate’s action, emphasized the pivotal role the SEDC would play in ushering in a new era of socio-economic progress for the region.

Kalu underscored the comprehensive scope of the Commission’s mandate, highlighting its focus on key sectors such as transportation, healthcare, education, employment, agriculture, and infrastructure. He emphasized the imperative of addressing post-war reconstruction needs that have languished for over five decades, stressing the Commission’s responsibility to promote sustainable development through strategic planning and execution.

Moreover, Kalu lauded the concurrent efforts of regional stakeholders, including the ongoing Peace in South East Project (PISE-P), aimed at fostering harmony and prosperity through non-political means. With the Bill poised for presidential assent, anticipation mounts for the tangible impact the SEDC will have on job creation, business growth, and overall quality of life in the South East.
