In an astonishing turn of events, Peggy Jones, a 64-year-old Texan gardener, found herself in a harrowing ordeal when a snake fell from the sky, only to be snatched up by a hawk that proceeded to attack her. The incident unfolded while she was mowing her lawn in Silsbee, Texas, near the Louisiana border, on July 25th.
As the hawk’s prey plummeted onto Jones, the serpent coiled itself around her arm and began biting her repeatedly. To her shock, the hawk joined the fray, clawing at her arm in a futile attempt to reclaim its meal. Recounting the terrifying moment, Jones shared, “It (the snake) was starting to dart at my face… and he was striking my glasses and he just kept on and kept on. I just couldn’t get rid of the snake… I think I went into survival mode.”
Despite the ongoing struggle, the hawk eventually managed to tear the snake away from Jones’s arm. Her husband rushed her to the hospital, where she was treated for deep bite and talon wounds, along with her smashed glasses that had been smeared with snake venom.
Jones admitted that the incident left her traumatized, with sleepless nights haunted by nightmares of the event. She reflected on her survival, stating, “I’m happy I’m alive. I’m happy I’m here… It showed me how in a blink of an eye things can change. I feel differently about life now.” She attributed her survival to divine intervention, believing that the hawk’s involvement was “God’s way of letting me live.”
The snake, believed to be a non-venomous rat snake according to local snake expert Bryan Hughes, had fallen on Jones in a panicked state. Hughes explained, “It fell on the woman and hung onto her because this was a panicked, injured animal. Then the bird swept down to finish what it started.” This extraordinary encounter marks another chapter in Jones’s interactions with snakes, as she survived a venomous snake bite several years prior.
As she recovers from the shock and physical wounds, Jones continues to contemplate the unusual circumstances that spared her life. The Texan gardener’s remarkable story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the incredible ways in which fate can intervene.
