In a recent development at the federal high court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Tuesday, the embattled apex bank chief, Emefiele, has been granted bail in the sum of N20 million with one surety. The charges against him are related to “illegal possession of firearms.”

Presiding Judge Nicholas Oweibo ordered that Emefiele be remanded at the correctional center until his bail conditions are met. However, tensions escalated as the Department of State Services (DSS) insisted on taking custody of Emefiele.

A heated argument and an all-out brawl erupted between personnel from both services on the court premises.

Earlier, on June 9, President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele and directed him to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the deputy governor of the operations directorate.

The following day, the DSS made an announcement claiming that Emefiele was in their custody for “some investigative reasons.”

Subsequently, on July 13, a federal capital territory high court ordered the DSS to charge Emefiele in court if they have substantial evidence against him. The presiding judge, Hamza Muazu, emphasized that if Emefiele is not taken to a competent court within a week, he should be released on bail.

The DSS defended their custody of Emefiele, stating that he had access to family members and medical doctors during his time with them.
