Researchers at West Virginia University’s Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute have conducted a pioneering experiment using focused ultrasound to breach the blood-brain barrier, allowing Alzheimer’s drugs to penetrate the brain more efficiently.
The proof-of-concept study, led by Dr. Ali Rezai, showed enhanced removal of Alzheimer’s plaque in targeted brain regions. While the pilot study is promising, larger trials are needed to validate the approach.
The innovative technique holds potential not only for Alzheimer’s but also for treating brain tumors and other neurologic diseases.
