British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he will step down as leader of the governing Labour Party and leave office within weeks, marking a dramatic turn in British politics less than two years after leading Labour to a landslide election victory.
Starmer said he will remain as caretaker prime minister until the party selects a new leader, a process he expects to be completed before Parliament returns from its summer recess on September 1.
The announcement follows growing pressure from within Labour ranks for a leadership change as the government’s popularity has declined sharply since its sweeping victory in the July 2024 general election.
Speaking after announcing his decision, Starmer acknowledged concerns within his party about his ability to lead Labour into the next national election.
“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election,” he said. “I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.”
He added that every decision he had made as prime minister was guided by what he believed was best for the country.
“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first,” Starmer said.
The leadership shake-up comes as attention turns to potential successors within Labour. The political landscape was further energized following the return of Andy Burnham to Parliament after securing a decisive victory in last week’s Makerfield by-election.
Starmer’s departure marks the end of a brief but consequential tenure that saw Labour return to power after years in opposition. The coming leadership contest is expected to shape the party’s future direction as it seeks to rebuild public support and prepare for the next general election.
