U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee has revealed that she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. The 74-year-old Democrat from Texas, who is seeking her 16th term in Congress, made the announcement in a heartfelt statement late Sunday.

“As a member of Congress, I have been honored to be a leader in the fight for justice and equality,” Jackson Lee said. “I will approach this more personal fight with faith and courage. I am confident that my doctors have developed the best possible plan to target my specific disease. The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand in faith that God will strengthen me.”

Despite her diagnosis, Jackson Lee assured her constituents that she remains dedicated to her role in Congress. She acknowledged that her treatment may necessitate occasional absences but emphasized that her office would continue to serve the needs of her district. This came just months after a bid to become Houston’s mayor, a race in which she aimed to be the first Black female mayor of the nation’s fourth-largest city.
