In a deeply disturbing incident, unidentified gunmen have brutally murdered Justice Margaret Igbetar, a retired President of the Customary Court of Appeal in Makurdi, Benue State. Her lifeless body was tragically discovered by her own son at her residence on No. 1, Wantor Kwange Street, situated opposite the School of Medicine at Benue State University (BSU), Gboko Road, on a fateful Thursday night.

Sources close to the family revealed that when Justice Igbetar’s body was found in her home, it was already in an advanced state of decomposition. According to insiders, her son immediately reported the shocking murder to the authorities at the “E” Division Police station in Makurdi.

A family source disclosed, “It was evident that her body had begun decomposing, suggesting that she must have been killed before Thursday.” The Divisional Police Officer of the E Division, SP Daniel Ezeala, couldn’t be reached for an immediate comment. However, a credible police source acknowledged the incident.

Confirming the tragedy, the police source revealed, “Yes, sadly, her lifeless body was discovered at her house on Thursday, August 24, 2023. Though the condition of the body suggested that the demise couldn’t have occurred on that day, but maybe the day prior.”

The source further indicated, “Her son is cooperating with the investigation and providing valuable information that could potentially lead to the identification and arrest of suspects linked to this horrifying incident.”

Our correspondent learned from the police source that ongoing efforts are being made to piece together the circumstances surrounding Justice Igbetar’s death and to ascertain the individuals responsible for this heinous act.

When approached for a statement, Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the State Command, expressed that she was yet to receive comprehensive details about the incident.

The community is left in shock and mourning as investigations into this brutal crime continue.
