Media pioneer and CNN founder Ted Turner has died at the age of 87, according to reports from CNN. Turner, widely credited with transforming modern television news, passed away on Wednesday.
Turner changed the media landscape when he launched CNN in 1980, introducing the world’s first 24-hour television news network. His vision revolutionized how audiences consumed news and paved the way for nonstop global news coverage that has since become standard across the industry.
Beyond CNN, Turner built a powerful media empire through the Turner Broadcasting System, expanding cable television by creating the “superstation” concept that allowed local television stations to reach viewers nationwide. His influence extended through networks including TNT, Cartoon Network, and TBS.
CNN Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson paid tribute to Turner in a statement, describing him as “an intensely involved and committed leader” who was fearless in trusting his instincts and taking bold risks.
“He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN,” Thompson said. “Ted is the giant on whose shoulders we stand, and we will all take a moment today to recognize him and his impact on our lives and the world.”
No official cause of death has been announced. Turner disclosed in 2018 that he had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disorder that affects cognitive and physical functioning.
Turner leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the most influential figures in television and media history, remembered for reshaping cable broadcasting and redefining how news reaches audiences around the world.
