July 27, 2023

In an exhilarating match on Thursday, the Super Falcons of Nigeria showcased their prowess by clinching a dramatic 3-2 victory over co-hosts Australia, taking a significant step towards the second round of the Women’s World Cup. The game, filled with twists and turns, saw Uchenna Kalu, Osinachi Ohale, and substitute Asisat Oshoala as the heroes for Nigeria, overturning the 7th ranked Australian team.

Australia struck first, with Emily Van Egmond finding the net in the first minute of added time in the first half. However, Nigeria responded swiftly, with Kanu leveling the score in the sixth minute of added time. In the 65th minute, Ohale displayed her bravery and skill, putting the Super Falcons ahead. Later, in the 72nd minute, Oshoala capitalized on a defensive mix-up between Cortnee Vine and Mackenzie Arnold to extend Nigeria’s lead to 3-1.

Despite a determined effort from the hosts, Alanna Kennedy managed to reduce the deficit with a header in the 100th minute. Nevertheless, the Super Falcons held their ground and secured a memorable victory.

With this remarkable win, Nigeria’s path to the second round looks promising. Their next and final match is scheduled against the Republic of Ireland on Monday, where they need only a single point to advance.
