Niger’s Military Dissolves Constitution, Becomes Sixth West African Country to Experience a Coup since 2020…
In a significant development, the coup in Niger has been declared successful, as soldiers took control of the country and announced the dissolution of the constitution, according to a report by Al Jazeera.
Led by Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane, the military declared the coup and immediately closed all West African borders. Speaking on national television, Mr. Abdramane stated, “the defense and security forces… have decided to put an end to the regime you are familiar with.”
The coup marks Niger as the sixth country in the West African subregion to experience such an event since August 2020.
Earlier this week, Premium Times reported on the attempted coup in Niger, during which soldiers blocked access to the presidential palace, with President Mohammed Bazoum believed to be held captive inside.
In response to the situation, leaders from around the world, including Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, have condemned the coup, firmly stating that it will not be tolerated. The United States, France, UN, ECOWAS, and the African Union have also joined in condemning the coup and called for a return to the status quo.
The news of the coup has sparked protests within Niger, with citizens expressing their opposition to the military’s actions.
In an effort to mediate in the crisis, ECOWAS, led by President Bola Tinubu, sent President Patrice Talon of Benin to Niger on Wednesday. However, it remains unclear at the time of this report whether President Talon has had an opportunity to meet with the coup leaders or ousted President Mohammed Bazoum.
The situation in Niger continues to evolve, and the international community remains vigilant in monitoring further developments.
