In a dramatic turn of events, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, a ministerial nominee from Kaduna State, collapsed during his screening by the Senate on Wednesday. Lawmakers rushed to his aid as the nominee fell to the floor after speaking for several minutes.
Lawal, along with two other nominees, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim from Kwara State and Mr. Ayodele Olawande from Ondo State, were undergoing the screening process. He had just finished presenting to the lawmakers and was about to take questions when the incident occurred.
Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele had moved a motion to extend the sitting time beyond 2 pm to complete the day’s agenda. The Senate subsequently went into a closed-door session as efforts were made to revive the collapsed nominee, who remained inside the chamber.
