“Sen. Robert Menendez and Wife Indicted on Bribery Charges”

September 22, 2023

In a stunning turn of events, Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, and his wife, Nadine Menendez, have been charged with bribery in a federal indictment filed in Manhattan. The charges encompass conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under the color of official right.

The indictment alleges that the couple accepted “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in bribes, which included cash, gold bars, mortgage payments, luxury vehicles, and other valuable items. Federal agents discovered a substantial amount of cash, hidden in envelopes and clothing, during a search of the Menendez’s home in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, in June 2022.

The charges also involve New Jersey businessmen Wael Hana and Jose Uribe, who allegedly provided bribes in exchange for the senator’s influence. The indictment reveals a Mercedes-Benz convertible worth over $60,000 and gold bars worth hundreds of thousands of dollars among the bribes received.

Senator Menendez, who previously chaired the Foreign Relations Committee, has announced that he will step down from his role during the legal proceedings. In response to the charges, he dismissed them as a misrepresentation of his congressional duties and stated that he remains focused on his work.

Nadine Menendez, represented by lawyer David Schertler, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and intends to vigorously defend herself in court.

The U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, revealed that the investigation is ongoing and encouraged anyone with information related to the case to contact the FBI’s tip line.

Among the allegations in the indictment is the claim that Senator Menendez provided sensitive U.S. government information to benefit the Egyptian government. The indictment further states that he pressured a U.S. Agriculture Department official to protect a business monopoly granted to Wael Hana by Egypt.

This indictment is the second legal challenge Senator Menendez has faced since his election to the Senate in 2006. In 2015, he was charged with accepting favors from a Florida eye doctor, but the case ended in a mistrial, and federal prosecutors opted not to retry him.

If convicted, Senator Menendez and his wife may have to forfeit their property and assets traced to the alleged offenses, including their home and valuable items. These charges come at a critical time as Senator Menendez faces re-election next year, and he appears to be the first sitting senator in U.S. history to be indicted on two unrelated criminal allegations.
