Remembering Sinéad O’Connor: Celebrities Pay Tribute to the Iconic ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ Singer

Sinéad O’Connor, the renowned singer known for her iconic rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” passed away at the age of 56 on Wednesday, July 26. Her family confirmed the sad news in a statement to RTE, expressing their devastation and requesting privacy during this difficult time.

The cause of her death has not been disclosed yet. She leaves behind her three children: Jake, Roisin, and Yeshua. Tragically, in January 2022, O’Connor announced the loss of her son Shane, who died by suicide at the age of 17.

Throughout her career, O’Connor’s soulful voice earned her several Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, garnering her worldwide fame.

In a poignant Facebook post shortly before her passing, the Grammy winner shared her return to London after 23 years and her ongoing work on a new album, set to be released in 2024.

As the news of her passing spread, celebrities from all walks of life paid heartfelt tributes to the late singer:

Ice T took to Twitter to acknowledge O’Connor’s significant impact, stating, “Respect to Sinéad … She stood for something … Unlike most people… Rest Easy…🙏🏽.”

Rosie O’Donnell expressed her grief on Instagram, writing, “Just heartbroken 💔— rip u brave warrior woman — soar with ur son.”

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, known for his role in The Walking Dead, tweeted, “Sad to hear about Sinéad O’Connor passing. Her story … if you don’t know it? Take a minute. May she rest in peace.”

Conor McGregor, the famous boxer, shared an old interview clip of O’Connor on Instagram, captioning it with words of admiration, “What a Woman! Rest In Peace, Sinéad 🙏❤️🇮🇪.” In a subsequent tweet, he further praised her as an iconic voice and a friend, noting that her music would continue to inspire.

Questlove, the drummer of The Roots, posted on Instagram, “Heartbreaking man. One of the nicest humans. Damn man. This is devastating.”

Melissa Etheridge, a fellow musician, tweeted, “This is such a tragedy. What a loss. She was haunted all her life. What a talent. I remember my first Grammy show meeting this small shy Irish girl.”

Margo Price, a country singer, paid tribute to O’Connor’s bravery and legacy, tweeting, “I hope Sinéad O’Connor finds the peace she’s been seeking. Way ahead of her time and gone too soon. 💔.”

E.L. James, the author, acknowledged O’Connor’s courage with a simple yet meaningful message, “Tragic news. Sinéad O’Connor was a courageous woman. May she rest in peace.”

Eric Alper, a producer who worked with O’Connor on several albums, shared his profound grief on Twitter, saying, “May she rest in peace. She deserves it, wanted it, strived for it and could never achieve it. I will miss her greatly.”

Sky Ferreira, a singer, expressed her sorrow with a broken heart emoji and an old magazine article about O’Connor.

Tim Burgess, the frontman of The Charlatans, praised O’Connor’s punk spirit and the lack of compromise in her life, adding, “Hoping that she has found peace x.”

The world has lost a true musical icon, but Sinéad O’Connor’s powerful voice and spirit will forever live on in her timeless music. May she rest in peace.
