Rafael Nadal has had arthroscopic surgery to treat his psoas muscle, his representative has said.
The results of the surgery are expected on Saturday.
“Rafael Nadal has undergone minor arthroscopic surgery to review the left psoas lesion that has kept him out of competition,” read a statement from Benito Perez-Barbadillo.
“This intervention has been carried out in Barcelona.”
The 22-time Grand Slam champion has not played since losing in the second round of the Australian Open in January.
Earlier in May at a press conference,
he confirmed he would not be competing at Roland-Garros for the first time since 2004 having failed to overcome his injury in time.
Nadal told reporters that he would rest for an unspecified period of time before potentially returning at the end of the year for the Davis Cup, ahead of a 2024 which he believes will be his last year on the tour.
After featuring at last year’s US Open, Nadal only returned at the end of the season to play at the Paris Masters and the Nitto ATP Finals.
He also played two matches at the United Cup at the start of this year before his loss at the Australian Open to Mackenzie McDonald.
He has not played since.
