The recent call by the FG to embrace bicycles for transportation in Nigeria has sparked considerable debate. While the intention to promote a greener and healthier mode of commuting is commendable, it’s essential to acknowledge the valid concerns raised by citizens regarding safety and inadequate infrastructure.

Nigeria lacks dedicated bicycle lanes, making it challenging for riders to navigate through congested and often chaotic roads. Safety should be a primary concern when encouraging a shift towards bicycle commuting, and without proper infrastructure, riders’ well-being cannot be guaranteed.

The absence of traffic lights on most city roads and reckless driving practices further compound the risks faced by cyclists. Proper town planning is urgently required to create safer roadways that accommodate all transportation modes, including bicycles.

Rather than outrightly dismissing the FG’s suggestion, we must call for a holistic approach that addresses both the benefits and challenges of promoting bicycles. Encouraging the use of bicycles can alleviate traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and improve public health by promoting physical activity.

To ensure the success of such a transition, the government must invest in the development of dedicated bicycle lanes, establish comprehensive traffic management systems, and enforce stricter traffic regulations. Moreover, public awareness campaigns on road safety and responsible driving behavior should be widespread.

Ultimately, the focus should be on creating a balanced and inclusive transportation system that accommodates the needs of all citizens. By working collaboratively, the government, urban planners, and citizens can pave the way for a more sustainable, healthier, and safer commuting future in Nigeria.
