Former Governor Peter Obi took to social media today, expressing his views on President Tinubu’s administration’s recent declaration of a 50% slash in interstate transport fares for the upcoming Yuletide season. Obi commended the move as a positive step but raised critical questions about its sustainability and implementation.

In a post on his social media account, Obi stated, “While I applaud the government’s effort to alleviate the transportation burden on citizens this festive season, we must also address the looming challenges post-Yuletide. The real concern is whether there’s a sustainable policy to cushion the masses from persistent high transportation costs.”

Expressing disappointment in the lack of clarity in the implementation process, Obi highlighted that inquiries made across various cities, including Abuja, Lagos, Onitsha, Kano, and others, revealed that transporters were unaware of the 50% discount. He questioned the announced 28 designated routes and raised doubts about checks and balances to ensure compliance.

Obi urged the government to transparently communicate with transport companies to avoid exploiting the vulnerable. He stated, “This intervention effort must not be a mere media stunt; the Nigerian people deserve genuine relief, not just during festivities but in the face of ongoing hardships. Let’s not use compassion as a cover for opaque policy implementation.”
