Moves Aimed at Solidifying Unity within APC as Tinubu Eyes Second Term in 2027
President Bola Tinubu has taken proactive steps to reconcile the strained relationship between the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, and the national leader of the NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso. The president’s efforts are seen as a strategic move ahead of his anticipated second-term bid in 2027.
In separate meetings with both leaders, President Tinubu granted them time to communicate his intentions to their respective stakeholders before reconvening for a final reconciliation session. Last week, the president engaged with Ganduje and key APC figures from Kano State, followed by a meeting with Kwankwaso on Sunday. The upcoming reconciliation meeting is expected to involve the two former Kano State governors, each accompanied by two representatives.
President Tinubu tasked Ganduje with initiating the unity-building process among APC stakeholders in Kano. Notably, the president expressed his intention to bring Kwankwaso into the APC fold, urging Ganduje to strategize towards this objective. Despite reservations among some APC stakeholders, dissenting voices were notably absent during the Abuja meeting.
During the meeting, President Tinubu addressed concerns about the Supreme Court judgment in Kano, assuring party leaders that he played no role in the outcome. He called on the party’s leaders to reach out to disheartened APC members in Kano and mend fences. The president emphasized the importance of effective reconciliation skills in managing the Kano APC stakeholders, with further consultations planned after Ganduje’s efforts.
Notably, the president did not discuss potential political appointments as ‘compensation’ for key figures related to the recent gubernatorial loss in Kano. The reconciliation process is set to navigate the delicate aftermath of the Supreme Court decision, aiming to strengthen APC’s unity as President Tinubu eyes a second term.
