In a surprising turn of events, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, appears to be moving closer to joining the All Progressives Congress (APC). This development comes on the heels of a crucial meeting between Wike’s loyalists within the APC and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, led by Dr. Abdulahi Ganduje.
However, this impending shift in allegiance has ignited a fierce backlash from a faction of the party loyal to a former Governor of Rivers State and the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi. A delegation led by Tony Okocha, a former Chief of Staff to Amaechi, conveyed their discontent to Ganduje.
Okocha went on to describe Nyesom Wike as the “political infantry” in the state, suggesting that the party should reach out to Wike when considering appointments. He also raised concerns about another faction of the party in Rivers State, led by Tonye Cole and Dakuku Peterside, who recently sought political appointments despite their alleged history of working against the APC.
The most striking allegation made by Okocha was related to the 2019 elections. He claimed that Amaechi had called a meeting in which he instructed party members to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, instead of the APC candidate, Bola Tinubu. This revelation has raised questions about the party’s internal dynamics and loyalties.
Okocha further questioned how the APC managed to win the presidential election in Rivers State while PDP secured victories in 13 out of 15 federal constituencies, all three senatorial seats, and the governorship election. These developments have left many wondering about the intricate political maneuvers at play in the state.
As the political landscape in Rivers State continues to evolve, Nyesom Wike’s potential move to the APC could have far-reaching consequences for the party’s dynamics and the upcoming political landscape in the state. The situation remains fluid, and political observers are keenly watching for further developments in this intriguing political saga.
