The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has issued an urgent appeal to the state government to take proactive measures in preventing the potential spread of diphtheria and anthrax in the region.
In a statement released by the party’s state publicity secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, on Saturday in Makurdi, the PDP highlighted the reports of a diphtheria outbreak in neighboring Kaduna State, which has already claimed six lives with several others hospitalized.
Adding to the alarm, there have been reports of anthrax cases in the nearby Taraba State, leading to fatalities and hospitalizations.
Given the close proximity between Taraba and Benue and the frequent movement of people between these states, the PDP emphasized the need for vigilance in preventing any potential outbreaks in Benue.
Mr. Iortyom urged the state government to establish a specialized committee comprising medical experts to develop strategies for detecting and managing the earliest signs of these diseases, thus effectively curbing their spread within the state.
He stressed the importance of ensuring the availability of vaccines and other essential drugs to combat the diseases, and called for the establishment of suitable medical infrastructure, including laboratories and quarantine centers, to handle any detected cases promptly.
The PDP publicity secretary underlined the significance of adhering to global best practices to ensure the safety and well-being of the people in the state.
It is imperative that the authorities remain proactive and vigilant in monitoring and addressing any emerging health risks in the region.
