In response to a viral video showing staff collecting cash from passengers without tickets on the Lagos-Ibadan Train Service, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has taken action. The NRC suspended several employees pending an ongoing investigation into the matter.
Passenger Daramola Adenike shared a video on social media, revealing that she paid cash for five people, while over 60 others did the same in Coach Seven of the train. The NRC’s Deputy Director of Public Relations, Yakub Mahmood, condemned this “flagrant disobedience of laid down rules” and emphasized that the suspended staff will face disciplinary proceedings.
The NRC plans to deploy an electronic ticketing system on the Lagos-Ibadan Train Service, aiming to prevent such incidents in the future. The management encourages passengers to insist on boarding tickets and vows not to tolerate such actions by staff.
