In a significant development, Nigerian importers can now legally utilize Cotonou Ports in Benin Republic for their import needs. This pivotal decision emerged during a two-day working visit by Mr. Alain Kinkati, the Director-General of Customs Service of Benin Republic, as outlined in a communique released at the conclusion of their meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, the Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), elaborated that the specific framework details are currently under development. Under this arrangement, goods destined for Nigeria will undergo assessment and pay the necessary duties in the originating country, with these duties being credited to the Nigerian government through the Nigerian Customs Service.

Adeniyi hailed this framework as a significant step forward in fostering sub-regional integration and trade facilitation, achieved through cooperation with counterparts in neighboring Benin Republic. Furthermore, he announced the substantial reduction of barriers along trade corridors, with a commitment to further minimize checkpoints in collaboration with the police authorities.

Additionally, Adeniyi disclosed that final preparations are underway to align the Customs Service’s Information Technology system with that of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to combat vehicle smuggling into the country.

In line with enhancing security, the Acting Customs boss also shared that they are in the process of harmonizing the list of prohibited items with Benin Republic, further solidifying the organization’s security objectives.
