The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reaffirmed its commitment to proceed with a nationwide protest against the recent increase in petrol prices and other issues. Despite engaging in discussions with the federal government, the NLC remains steadfast in its decision to hold the mass protest.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, stated that the meeting with the government did not lead to any changes in their planned course of action. In the union’s statement, Ajaero emphasized that they are standing firm as custodians of the interests and aspirations of Nigerian workers and citizens.

The NLC is demanding the government’s attention to address what they refer to as “anti-poor policies,” including the rise in petrol prices, tuition fees, and VAT, among other grievances.

Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, acknowledged the right to peaceful protests while urging all parties involved to prevent any opportunistic individuals from causing disruptions. The police have been instructed to engage in constructive discussions with NLC/TUC leadership to find common ground and facilitate a peaceful resolution.

Mr. Egbetokun emphasized the importance of a coordinated and peaceful approach in seeking meaningful solutions without resorting to violence or disruptions to public order.
