Mayor Donna Deegan has confirmed that a tragic shooting incident at a store on Kings Road in Northwest Jacksonville has resulted in multiple fatalities. The area saw a heavy police presence following the incident. According to reports, a man has barricaded himself inside a Dollar General store on Kings Road.

Mayor Deegan expressed her dismay, stating, “This is unacceptable. One shooting is too much, but these mass shootings are really hard to take.”

The incident unfolded around 12:45 p.m. when a suspicious man, believed to be the shooter, was spotted at Edward Waters University. Witnesses saw the alleged shooter don a ballistics vest and retreat behind the EWU library. Despite campus security’s efforts, the man managed to evade capture.

Mayor Deegan was on-site, discussing the situation with officials and District 13 State Representative Angie Nixon, who represents the neighborhood. This unusual presence indicates the severity of the case.

Details regarding the exact sequence of events remain limited, but the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) is expected to provide updates soon.

Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing moments, with one individual narrowly avoiding entry into the Dollar General due to lack of funds. Moments later, gunshots echoed, targeting passing cars. The witness described seeing a woman running and another man injured.

Angie Nixon expressed her sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing the need for well-resourced communities and fostering a positive environment. City leaders gathered for a prayer circle to honor the victims.

Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman shared her distress, saying, “I’m tired of seeing all the shootings. The people in this community are hurting.” While unconfirmed, there are reports that the alleged shooter has been neutralized.

The JSO deployed a helicopter and SWAT team to the scene, with the situation unfolding since approximately 1 p.m. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue units also responded to the incident.

As of late afternoon, some law enforcement and rescue personnel were seen leaving the area. Authorities have cordoned off sections of King Street near Canal Street.

Residents are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Tragically, this incident occurred on the same date as a mass shooting five years ago, during which two people lost their lives and 11 others were injured at a gaming tournament at the former Jacksonville Landing.
