In a disturbing turn of events, two villages in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State witnessed a deadly clash between soldiers and gunmen on Saturday morning. The incident unfolded shortly after Governor Caleb Mutfwang decided to ease the 24-hour curfew imposed on the region.

Governor Mutfwang had cited improved security conditions and modified the curfew to be in effect from 8 am to 4 pm. However, this decision seemingly triggered a violent confrontation in Satguru and Tyop villages.

Sources reveal that the clash resulted in numerous casualties, with approximately 30 gunmen reported dead and several soldiers sustaining injuries. The incident occurred between 7 to 7:30 am when a group of gunmen launched an attack on communities along Gindri road. Swift response from the military led to the death of the assailants, the arrest of over 50 individuals with weapons, and injuries to four soldiers.

Despite these developments, fear continues to grip the affected communities. An anonymous security operative informed Daily Trust, “The incident occurred between 7 to 7:30 am when the gunmen came in their numbers and started attacking some communities along Gindri road. In no time, the soldiers were alerted and immediately responded.”

Another anonymous source from the area confirmed the incident, stating that the local population remains in fear. The spokesperson of Operation Safe Haven, a multi-security taskforce responsible for maintaining peace in the region, is yet to respond to inquiries made by our correspondent.

As the situation unfolds, the communities affected by this violent clash are left grappling with the aftermath, questioning the impact of the curfew relaxation on their safety and security.”
