A trend of eccentric endurance challenges has taken hold in Nigeria, with participants attempting record-breaking feats of endurance. One man, Tembu Ebere, embarked on a unique challenge to cry continuously for seven days, but faced unexpected consequences. Ebere reported experiencing headaches, puffy eyes, a swollen face, and even temporary blindness lasting 45 minutes. Despite the difficulties, he remains determined to achieve his sobbing target.
The endurance challenge frenzy in Nigeria gained momentum after chef Hilda Baci’s successful attempt to cook continuously for 93 hours and 11 minutes, which captured public attention and caused the Guinness World Records website to crash. Inspired by Baci’s achievement, others have since undertaken endeavors such as singing, praying, and kissing for extended periods.
However, some of these stunts have faced criticism for being perceived as frivolous or offensive. An attempt to break the kissing record was banned in Ekiti state due to concerns about its morality and potential to harm the state’s image. Additionally, a massage endurance record attempt resulted in a participant collapsing after 50 hours, and two chefs were disqualified during a marathon cooking attempt for turning off their stoves and sleeping.
Guinness World Records has advised Nigerians to approach their record-breaking attempts with caution and to liaise with the organization to ensure proper recognition. After facing backlash for its comments, Guinness World Records clarified that it welcomes applications from around the world and that it appreciates the enthusiasm from Nigeria.
As the trend continues, the country’s appetite for endurance feats is raising questions about the impact and purpose of such challenges. While they may capture attention and bring excitement, the significance and long-term effects of these records are being debated.
