Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has taken action to alleviate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal by reducing fares for state-owned buses by 50 per cent. The announcement was made via a video shared on Twitter by his media aide, Jubril Gawat.
The new reduced bus fares will come into effect starting Wednesday. This decision comes in response to the fuel subsidy removal that was declared by President Bola Tinubu on 29th May, causing a three-fold increase in petrol prices nationwide.
The sudden price hike has led to significant hardships for many Nigerians, with transportation fares skyrocketing. To provide immediate relief, Governor Sanwo-Olu confirmed that public transportation controlled by LAMATA will operate at a 50 per cent discount on all routes in Lagos.
Furthermore, the governor stated that informal Yellow buses will also offer a 25 per cent fare reduction, with the formal announcement to be made by their body. This reduction is expected to take effect on the same day or no later than Wednesday.
Additionally, to support workers in the state public service, the fleet of staff buses will be expanded, further easing the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.
