In a stunning Round of 16 clash on Monday night, Ivory Coast, the hosts of the African Cup of Nations, dethroned tournament favorites and defending champions Senegal.
Senegal initially took the lead with a goal from Habibou Mouhamadou Diallo in the first half. However, a late equalizer from the hosts’ Franck Kessie, converted from the penalty spot in the second half, forced the game into extra time and eventually led to a nail-biting penalty shootout.
The turning point came when Senegal’s Moussa Niakhate missed his spot kick, providing the home side with a crucial advantage. Franck Kessie capitalized on the opportunity, securing a 5-4 victory on penalties and sending shockwaves through the AFCON tournament.
