“India Achieves Milestone: Successfully Lands Spacecraft Near Moon’s South Pole, Joins Prestigious Global Space Community”

August 23, 2023

In a monumental achievement, India has etched its name in the annals of space exploration by successfully landing a spacecraft near the moon’s south pole, making it the pioneer country to venture into this uncharted territory. The significance of this achievement stems from the belief among scientists that this region could hold precious reserves of frozen water. This triumph also marks India as the fourth nation to successfully execute a moon landing.

At precisely 6:04 AM local time, a lander carrying a rover gracefully touched down on the lunar surface, evoking waves of jubilation and applause among the watching space scientists in Bengaluru, India. This momentous feat comes after a previous attempt in 2019 that had unfortunately faltered. By achieving this milestone, India joins the ranks of the United States, the Soviet Union, and China in the exclusive club of lunar explorers.

Even as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the BRICS nations summit in South Africa, he keenly observed the historic landing. Expressing his excitement, Modi declared, “India is now on the moon. India has reached the south pole of the moon — no other country has achieved that. We are witnessing history,” waving the tri-colored Indian flag with pride.

The timing of India’s achievement coincides with Russia’s recent setback. Russia’s Luna-25 mission, intended for the same lunar region, spiraled into an uncontrolled orbit and crashed. The attempt would have marked Russia’s first successful lunar landing in 47 years. Roscosmos, Russia’s state-controlled space corporation, attributed the failure to a lack of expertise following decades of limited lunar research since the last Soviet lunar mission in 1976.

Across India, people exuded excitement and anticipation, congregating around televisions in offices, shops, restaurants, and homes. Thousands fervently prayed for the mission’s success, lighting oil lamps along river banks, temples, and religious sites, including the revered city of Varanasi in northern India.

India’s Chandrayaan-3, translating to “moon craft” in Sanskrit, embarked on its journey from Sriharikota, a launchpad in southern India, on July 14.

Reflecting on this triumph, the Indian Space Research Organization stated earlier in the day, “India’s pursuit of space exploration reaches a remarkable milestone with the impending Chandrayaan-3 Mission, poised to achieve a soft landing on the lunar surface. This achievement marks a significant step forward for Indian Science, Engineering, Technology, and Industry, symbolizing our nation’s progress in space exploration.”
