The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, Wednesday, commissioned the Community Response Unit (CRU) project during his visit to the Lagos state Police Command, Ikeja Lagos.
The event, attended by notable figures and senior lawyers, marked a significant move towards transparency and public confidence in the Nigerian Police Force.
IGP Egbetokun, who is originally from Lagos, expressed his pleasure at returning to his hometown during the official visit and emphasised the CRU’s importance in enhancing accountability and trust with the public.
He said, “We have a unit where all those complaints will go to, avoiding reporting on social media,” he assured. The IGP revealed plans to meticulously select and train officers for the unit and to provide the necessary resources for its effective functioning.”
He expressed gratitude to donors for their support and hinted at intentions to establish similar units across all states for nationwide citizen interaction improvement. Esteemed figures like Olumide Akpata, Femi Falana, and Joe Okie Odumakin attended the event, offering their endorsement.
Akpata lauded the CRU’s establishment for bridging police-citizen communication and hoped it would enhance public engagement. Femi Falana encouraged adherence to the new police act, acknowledging torture as a criminal offense. He commended the CRU unit and offered pro bono representation for officers, urging its replication nationwide.
