Igede People of Benue State Appeal to President Bola Tinubu for the Release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu

July 19, 2023

In a heartfelt plea, the Igede people of Benue State have urged President Bola Tinubu to act in the spirit of justice, equity, and fairness by releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The appeal, conveyed through a special letter signed by the Conveners of the organization, Obo Mike Omenka, and Agori Dennis Eka, Secretary, emphasized that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s continued unjust detention has led to a perpetual state of trauma, property destruction, and

significant economic setbacks in the South Eastern Region and Nigeria as a whole.

The letter highlights that despite facing criminal charges and being discharged and acquitted by competent courts, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention, causing civil unrest not only in the South East but also across the entire nation. The Igede people believe that no government can flourish on a foundation of injustice and that denying fundamental human rights to a marginalized region is a stain on Nigeria’s democracy.

The organization, therefore, appeals not only to President Bola Tinubu but also to advocates of civil liberty, human rights, and civil society organizations worldwide to raise their voices against this injustice. They firmly believe that the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would foster lasting peace in the South East and contribute to robust economic development in Nigeria.

Standing in solidarity with the Eastern part of the nation, which is in dire need of a voice of reason to prevent further chaos, the Igede people emphasize the urgency of the situation. They call upon President Tinubu to take a stand for justice, equity, and fairness, setting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu free and restoring hope and freedom to the Igbo people.

The letter also urges Igbo political leaders to embark on soul-searching and self-realization, encouraging them to support efforts to quell the injustice instead of exploiting it for personal political gains. The Igede people challenge these leaders to use their influence to engage relevant institutions and authorities in expediting the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
