Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue state has made a significant announcement, pledging amnesty to all criminals who choose to repent. The governor conveyed this promise during his visit to the Akpuuna community in the Ukum Local Government Area, following a tragic attack on July 4 that resulted in the loss of 24 lives.
Expressing his condolences to the affected families, Governor Alia assured the people of Benue that his administration is fully committed to combating criminal activities in the state. He emphasized the importance of rehabilitating and reintegrating individuals involved in criminal acts if they genuinely repent and commit to a life free from crime.
“We will offer rehabilitation and reintegration programs for those who genuinely choose to abandon their criminal ways,” the governor stated. “Through this process, they can become productive members of society, benefitting both themselves and their families. Our aim is to ensure the safety and peace of mind of our citizens,” he added.
Governor Alia further emphasized that his administration is prepared to promote peaceful coexistence and warned that severe consequences await anyone who fuels insecurity and violence. He issued a stern warning to traditional rulers who provide shelter for criminals within their jurisdictions, stating that they will not be exempt from the law if caught.
During the visit, the district head of Akpuuna, John Kungwa, expressed gratitude to the governor for his presence and described the killings as an attempt to seize their ancestral lands. Mr. Kungwa praised the resilience of the community members in resisting the criminals and shared that the attack followed threats received from unidentified individuals.
The governor was accompanied by top government officials and heads of security agencies during his visit to the community.
