Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, emphasized the importance of citizens-centred governance in driving inclusive development in the country. He made these remarks during the launch of Professor Ishaq Akintola’s autobiography and retirement program in Lagos.

During the event, which also celebrated Akintola’s contributions as a lecturer at Lagos State University (LASU) and the Founder of Muslim Rights Concerns (MURIC), El-Rufai highlighted the need to move away from politics based on ethnic or religious affiliations, as it is bound to fail. He drew parallels between the present political landscape and the Abiola-Kingibe era, emphasizing that the success of the Tinubu-Shettima leadership demonstrated the positive outcomes of transcending religious boundaries.

El-Rufai emphasized the importance of merit-based leadership rather than entitlement, citing the accomplishments of the current administration as evidence of the positive impact it can have within a short period. He urged society to de-emphasize religion and ethnicity, striving for a society where no one faces discrimination based on those factors.

Reflecting on his own experiences in Kaduna State, El-Rufai noted that the state’s previous leadership choices based on entitlement resulted in prolonged crises. However, a recent change in leadership selection has brought about positive changes.

El-Rufai commended Akintola for his religious activism through MURIC and credited him with playing a role in the power shift from the North to the South in 2023. He expressed admiration for Akintola’s commitment to uprightness and a just Nigerian society, extending his wishes for continued wisdom in his endeavors.

During the event, El-Rufai was honored with the “Icon of Ariwa Integrity” award for his contributions to humanity. Other notable individuals, including Isa Pantami, former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, and Muiz Banire, former Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, were also recognized.

The occasion brought together academics, government officials, religious groups, and corporate representatives to celebrate the achievements of Professor Akintola and his impactful work.
