FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Dares PDP Leadership, Defends Actions

August 31, 2023

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has thrown down the gauntlet to the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging them to take action against him for alleged anti-party activities.

In an interview with Channels TV, Wike questioned, “Who will discipline me? I should be the one calling for discipline for those who violated the party’s constitution, especially regarding party-supported rotation.”

Undeterred, the politician openly dared PDP to suspend or take any action against him, emphasizing, “I want to dare anybody.”

Wike, previously the Governor of Rivers State, was a prominent member of the PDP G5 governors who opposed Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy in the February 25th presidential election. They contested the party’s decision to zone the presidential nomination to the northern region instead of the southern part of the country.

The former governor played a key role in the campaign against Atiku’s presidential bid, instead supporting Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This stance strained relations with the PDP leadership.

In what appeared to be a recognition of his support, Wike, currently a card-carrying PDP member, was appointed as the FCT Minister in Tinubu’s cabinet.

Wike declared, “We’re awaiting the findings of the presidential panel. This will reveal those truly working for the party’s benefit.”

Expressing his incredulity at the idea of his expulsion, Wike boasted about PDP’s successes in his state during the general elections, stating, “How can anyone talk about expelling me? A state that produced a governor, three senators, 32 House of Assembly members, and 11 out of 13 House of Representatives members.”

He concluded with unwavering confidence, stating, “Nobody has the capacity to do it. So, the question of whether they will take action doesn’t even arise.”
