FAAN MD Acquires N200 Million Official Vehicle Amidst Security Concerns and Airport Needs

August 23, 2023

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Kabir Yusuf Mohammed, has come under scrutiny for reportedly purchasing an official vehicle worth approximately N200 million, while airports are grappling with security issues and critical operational requirements.

The lavish acquisition involved a Toyota Land Cruiser 70th Anniversary Edition, funded from an allocation of about N200 million. The vehicle’s approval, attributed to Mohammed himself, has raised eyebrows, especially considering the pressing need for patrol vehicles and security measures at various airports across the country.

“It is not supposed to be this much; that money is what they are supposed to spend on getting patrol vehicles and all that all over Nigeria. Not just for the Lagos airport alone but other airports too under FAAN,” commented an anonymous source.

The contradiction between the purchase of a luxury vehicle and the lack of sufficient patrol vehicles has sparked criticism. While Mr. Mohammed holds the position of FAAN MD and not airport manager, questions have arisen about the justification for such an extravagant expenditure given the current circumstances.

This decision surfaces despite reported security threats at Nigerian airports, notably the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. In a recent incident, thieves managed to steal airfield lighting systems from the airport runway, posing a significant security breach.

Reportedly, the airport’s management had suggested measures to enhance security, including clearing vegetation along the perimeter and reinforcing drainage canals. However, these recommendations appear to have been overlooked, indicating a disregard for safety concerns.

Observers have pointed out that the focus on obtaining a high-end vehicle for the MD overshadows the urgent need for improved security infrastructure and operational resources. The prevailing shortage of personnel in the security department, coupled with inadequate lighting and fencing, remains unresolved.

While the MD’s actions have triggered criticism, his approach to resource allocation and management decisions continues to draw attention. The seeming imbalance between personal gains and the pressing demands of the aviation sector raises questions about the leadership’s commitment to addressing critical security and operational issues.
