Nasir El-Rufai expressed strong dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu during a heated meeting at the State House this week, according to multiple reliable sources.

The former Kaduna governor criticized Tinubu’s lack of transparency regarding any concerns the president might have had about his ministerial appointment, suggesting an underlying hostility. This controversy surrounding his nomination continued to generate attention nationwide.

El-Rufai specifically pointed out that it seemed Tinubu had reservations about him due to awareness of the petitions against him. This account was confirmed by another State House official who was present at the meeting.

Before El-Rufai’s remarks, the president had mentioned awaiting a security report before making a final decision. El-Rufai, however, promptly interjected and informed the president that he had decided to withdraw as a potential minister.

El-Rufai’s candid remarks surprised many around the Presidential Villa, raising concerns about potential political consequences.

An aide from Aso Rock stated that they recognized El-Rufai’s competence and preferred him as an ally rather than an adversary.

Central to the issue were actions by national security adviser Nuhu Ribadu, who amplified complaints against El-Rufai’s suitability for the federal executive council, impacting his security clearance.

El-Rufai met the president after The Gazette reported his decision to step down from Tinubu’s cabinet due to security concerns. He blamed the president for allowing his security clearance to be withheld and rumors to spread about his status.

Out of the 48 nominations, El-Rufai was one of three withheld. The others, Abubakar Danladi and Stella Okotete, received less attention due to less controversy.

Ribadu and other aides urged the president to consider the damaging petitions against El-Rufai, alleging various misconducts.

El-Rufai rejected suggestions to reconcile with Ribadu before withdrawing his candidacy, despite not publicly commenting on the allegations against him.

Despite declining Tinubu’s appointment, El-Rufai expressed readiness to support the administration when needed, proposing Jafaru Sani as his replacement. He also informed Governor Uba Sani of his decision.

El-Rufai endorsed Tinubu for president earlier, a move seen as crucial for the northwestern region. His departure to Egypt left uncertainty about his future plans.
