EFCC Confirms Death of Former Chairman Ibrahim Lamorde at 61

May 26, 2024

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the death of its former Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, who passed away at the age of 61. According to a statement released by the commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, Lamorde died while receiving medical treatment in Egypt.

The EFCC expressed profound shock over Lamorde’s demise, highlighting his significant contributions to the commission and the nation. “He will be sorely missed both at the EFCC and the nation at large. The commission prays for the repose of his soul and comfort for his family, the EFCC, and the entire nation,” the statement read.

Lamorde’s illustrious career in law enforcement began as a senior police officer. He played a pivotal role in the formation of the EFCC, serving as the pioneer director of operations when the commission was established in 2003. His expertise and dedication saw him rise to the position of acting chairman in 2011, and he was confirmed as the substantive chairman by the Senate in 2012, during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Known for his steadfast fight against corruption, Lamorde’s tenure was not without controversy. Just before his replacement in 2015, he faced a Senate investigation for allegedly diverting N1 trillion in proceeds from assets and cash recovered by the EFCC. The accusations included the misappropriation of funds recovered from high-profile figures such as former Inspector-General of Police Tafa Balogun and former Bayelsa State Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

Lamorde staunchly denied these allegations, labeling them a smear campaign. He argued that the EFCC had not recovered assets worth N1 trillion during the period in question and thus, he could not have diverted funds that were not in the agency’s possession. In 2015, the EFCC issued a statement defending Lamorde, asserting that the allegations were unfounded and accusing the petitioner, Senator George Uboh, of maligning the EFCC’s leadership and misrepresenting events that predated Lamorde’s chairmanship.

Despite the controversies, Lamorde’s dedication to his role as an anti-graft fighter remained evident throughout his career. He was succeeded by Ibrahim Magu in 2015.

Lamorde’s passing marks the end of an era for the EFCC and Nigeria’s ongoing battle against corruption. His legacy, marked by both his contributions and the challenges he faced, will continue to influence the discourse on corruption and governance in Nigeria.
