A notable incident occurred at the Senate on Wednesday during the proceedings for the confirmation of ministerial nominees. Dr. Doris Uzoka, a nominee put forth by President Bola Tinubu, attracted attention when she chose to avoid addressing a question about her husband.
Hailing from Imo State, Uzoka commenced her introduction by highlighting her achievements and professional journey. As the medical practitioner turned banker faced a
barrage of queries, she adeptly tackled most of them. However, the atmosphere grew tense when she was confronted with a question concerning her immediate family.
The spotlight turned to Uzoka as three senators posed questions about her previous roles and her approach to potential future responsibilities. While some advocated for her to be granted an expedited confirmation process, Senate President Akpabio indicated his intention to pose additional questions to the nominee.
Akpabio commented, “I believe that certain aspects of her CV remain incomplete. Essential details such as family background, parental names, marital information, and offspring count are notably absent.”
In response, Uzoka wittily addressed the inquiry, stating, “Let me begin by addressing the final question. I came into this world as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Uzoka. I can confirm that I have a considerable number of children, encompassing both biological and non-biological relationships. My responsibilities extend to a diverse community of both women and men. I am privileged to be able to serve my community.”
Amidst a chorus of laughter from the assembly, the nominee maintained her composure and proceeded to address other issues raised during the session. However, observers noted her strategic avoidance of commentary regarding her spouse.
