Carl Dean, the longtime husband of country music icon Dolly Parton, has passed away at the age of 82.
Parton, 79, confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement on Instagram, reflecting on their more than six decades together.
“Carl and I spent many wonderful years together,” she wrote. “Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”
Dean passed away on Monday, March 3, in Nashville, Tennessee. According to Parton’s statement, he will be “laid to rest in a private ceremony.” The family has not disclosed the cause of death but has requested privacy during this difficult time.
Dean is survived by Parton and his two siblings, Sandra and Donnie.
The couple’s love story began in 1964 when they first met in Nashville. They married two years later in May 1966 and maintained a famously private relationship despite Parton’s worldwide fame.
Dean largely stayed out of the spotlight, preferring a quiet life away from the glitz of the entertainment industry. Still, Parton often spoke fondly of their enduring bond, crediting his steadfast support for much of her success.
News of Dean’s passing was first reported by The Associated Press.
