In a candid video posted on Sunday morning, music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs addressed the 2016 videotaped beating of his then-girlfriend Cassie, stating he “takes full responsibility” for his actions and revealing he has since sought professional help.
Looking directly into the camera, Diddy confessed, “It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you gotta do that. I was f***ed up. I mean, I hit rock bottom.” He acknowledged the brutal assault that took place in March 2016 at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles, where surveillance footage obtained by CNN showed him chasing Cassie down a hallway, grabbing her by the neck, and hurling her to the ground before kicking and dragging her.
Diddy admitted he sought therapy and rehab following the incident. “I had to go into therapy. Go into rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace,” he shared, though he did not specify the duration of his treatment.
The video concluded with an apology that appeared more directed at the public than Cassie. “I’m so sorry, but I’m committed to be a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry,” he said, notably omitting a direct apology to Cassie. (Click on the link below to watch Diddy’s video)
Cassie detailed the assault in a sexual assault lawsuit filed against Diddy in November, which was settled just one day later. At the time, Diddy’s attorney stressed that the settlement was not an admission of guilt, and Diddy himself denied all allegations made in multiple lawsuits.
The video marks the first time Diddy has publicly commented on the incident, adding a new dimension to the ongoing narrative surrounding the assault and its aftermath.
