Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, the daughter of President Bola Tinubu, found herself at the center of a social media storm following her Independence Day speech. In a viral video that circulated on Monday, Tinubu-Ojo, who also holds the title of Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, called on Nigerians to maintain hope despite the numerous challenges facing the country.
She began her speech with warm wishes, saying, “Happy Independence celebration to every Nigerian, especially my beloved father, Mr. President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the mother of the nation, my own mom, Senator Oluremi Tinubu CON.”
Tinubu-Ojo emphasized the importance of keeping hope alive, stating, “The founding fathers and founding mothers of our great nation Nigeria, we need to keep our hopes alive, the flames of hope must continue burning in us. Our hope is being renewed, and I’m very positive that this Nigeria will still work for every Nigerian, and all the beloved sons and daughters, the founding fathers, the founding mothers.”
However, her speech sparked criticism from some netizens who expressed their frustration over the country’s hardships and questioned the capacity in which she addressed the citizens.
One Twitter user, @Mr_abbaah, remarked, “You’re the first daughter of the president living your best life and happy, while the daughters of the people that voted for your father are in the bush, no prayers, shelter, sleeping for almost 2 weeks. But people like you are silent because they’re not mohbad or from Lagos 💔😭.”
@PO_GrassRootM added, “This is Tinubu’s daughter speaking on Independence Day. The question is, in what capacity is the daughter of Tinubu speaking? Power-drunken family.”
Addressing her as “Nigeria’s president’s daughter,” @RealQueenBee commented, “Ladies and gentlemen, behold Nigeria’s president’s daughter (Iyaloja – Mother of the markets), addressing the nation.”
It’s worth noting that shortly after her father’s presidential inauguration, Tinubu-Ojo updated her profile on X (formerly Twitter), reflecting the title “first daughter of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN).”
