Communication signals along the Abuja-Kaduna railway corridor have reportedly been stolen by unidentified individuals, raising concerns about the safety and efficiency of the rail system. A confidential source within the Nigerian Railway Corporation revealed that the theft occurred following a terrorist attack at Kubwa train station. The vandals not only stole communication signal equipment but also tampered with rail fasteners, posing potential dangers as trains traverse affected sections. The vandalism has resulted in reduced train speeds, impacting the overall service reliability.

The source lamented that the signal lights necessary for maintaining safe distances between trains were completely removed, particularly within the Rigasa yard premises. Despite the presence of security personnel, the vandals were able to compromise the communication systems and damage signaling equipment. This compromise has necessitated temporary speed restrictions along the rail line until the issues are addressed.

Pascal Nnolim, the Regional Manager of Idu Train Station, expressed concern about the increasing incidents of vandalism on the rail line. He revealed that track materials and other essential components had been vandalized, leading to the constant need for replacements. Despite efforts to repair and replace the damaged equipment, new instances of vandalism occur promptly.

Nnolim stated that some vandals had been arrested and prosecuted in the past, but the issue persists. He highlighted the challenge of securing the rail line and maintaining passenger safety amidst these incidents. The Abuja-Kaduna rail line has previously faced security threats, including an explosive device planted along the track in March 2022, resulting in fatalities and suspension of train operations.
