BREAKING: Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82 in London Clinic

July 13, 2025

London, UK – July 13, 2025

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has passed away at the age of 82. The news of his death was confirmed on Sunday by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote.

According to family sources, the former president had been battling an undisclosed illness and was recently discharged from an intensive care unit in London. He had reportedly taken ill during a routine medical check-up abroad and remained under close observation in the weeks leading up to his death.

Though the exact nature of the illness was not disclosed, Buhari was believed to be recuperating until his condition deteriorated unexpectedly.

Buhari, a retired major general and one of Nigeria’s most prominent political leaders, first rose to national prominence as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, following a coup that ousted the civilian government of President Shehu Shagari. Decades later, he made a historic political comeback, becoming a democratically elected president in 2015 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and served two consecutive terms until 2023.

His presidency was marked by a high-profile anti-corruption crusade, ambitious economic reforms, and a prolonged struggle to quell insurgency and insecurity across parts of the country. While his administration drew both praise and criticism, Buhari remained a central figure in Nigeria’s modern political narrative.

Tributes have begun pouring in from Nigerian leaders, global dignitaries, and citizens alike, recognizing his enduring legacy and contributions to national development.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming hours.

  1. He had no business running for office, given his chronic disease (whatever it was). How unconscionable to spend the nation’s resources flying a sick president abroad every few months? Nigerians and the wayward leaders don’t seem to understand the terrible topics. How many Europeans heads of governments made trips to Nigeria for medical care? Why do we have provisions for current and past office-holders to go abroad for medical care? We lack competent doctors or adequate facilities in Nigeria? What’s the reason for the foreign reserves wastage? If Nigerians say one or both excuses for heading to Europe is valid, then do something to correct the deficiencies. This must stop!
