Apple Enters the AI Wars with Chatbot “Ajax” Amid Industry Hype

July 19, 2023

In the rapidly evolving landscape of AI, Apple has broken its silence by revealing plans to develop its own chatbot, nicknamed “AppleGPT” but formally known as “Ajax,” powered by Google’s JAX framework, according to a recent report by Bloomberg. With multiple teams dedicated to the project, Apple aims to address potential privacy concerns while exploring potential use cases for the chatbot.

As of now, Apple has not disclosed specific details regarding the bot’s functionalities, launch dates, or intended platforms. However, an official announcement is expected to be made next year, offering more insights into Ajax’s capabilities. Speculation about the chatbot’s role intensifies as Apple’s annual earnings call approaches, likely providing further clarification.

Apple’s decision to venture into generative AI aligns with CEO Tim Cook’s previous remarks on the company’s interest in exploring this domain. Heading the initiative are John Giannandrea, responsible for Siri’s machine learning capabilities, and Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering. The team’s involvement suggests potential improvements for Siri, promising a more robust and useful digital assistant.

The generative AI field has witnessed significant growth in recent months, attracting almost every major tech company to hop aboard the hype train. Yesterday, Meta and Microsoft announced the launch of Llama 2, an AI chatbot geared towards commercial use, further reinforcing the intense competition in this rapidly evolving sector.

As Apple gears up to introduce Ajax, the chatbot industry anticipates another player entering the AI wars, with potential groundbreaking features from the tech giant known for pushing boundaries in innovation.
