July 27, 2023

Following the successful launch of the iOS version in May, OpenAI has now released a dedicated ChatGPT app for Android users. The app is initially available in four countries.

OpenAI has expanded its popular ChatGPT app to Android users, following its initial success on iPhones and iPads a few months ago. The Android version was released first in the US, India, Bangladesh, and Brazil, with plans for a global rollout in stages, much like the iOS launch.

As of July 27th, OpenAI announced that the Android ChatGPT app is now accessible in a range of new countries, including Argentina, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, the UK, and South Korea.

However, the launch of the Android app comes after data from Sensor Tower and Similarweb showed drops in web traffic and app installations for June. This raises questions about whether the app’s initial explosive success can be sustained or if it has reached a plateau, especially with the arrival of competing apps like Threads.

It’s worth noting that OpenAI’s GPT-4 model also powers the Bing AI chatbot, which has been available on Android for a few months now. In contrast, Google’s Bard AI relies solely on a web interface without a dedicated app. Several other tech companies are also following suit, rolling out AI-powered tools for mobile apps. Interestingly, Apple has yet to launch its own chatbot, but rumors suggest the company is already testing one internally, according to a recent report from Bloomberg.

As the ChatGPT app continues to expand its availability and reach, it remains to be seen how it will fare in the competitive landscape of AI-powered chatbots.
