A shocking incident unfolded in Miami Dade when a 3-year-old girl accidentally shot herself with a handgun while her relative celebrated a football touchdown on TV. The disturbing footage, posted by WPLG, captured the terrifying moment and the subsequent events that transpired.
The Incident:
The video shows young Serenity picking up the pistol in her home on a fateful Saturday while Orlando Young, 23, jumped up in jubilation during the football game. Almost instantly, a gunshot is heard, and the toddler is injured. Serenity’s grandmother, Robin Fuller, recounted, “It looks as if she is getting ready to pick up the gun, the gun went off, and I guess the bullet went through her finger.”
Panicked by the situation, Fuller called the police herself, leading to their swift arrival. She also noted that Serenity was supposed to be under the care of her other grandmother, who was conspicuously absent from the video at the time of the incident.
Young, who is a relative of the injured girl, informed the police that he had prepared breakfast for Serenity and was overseeing her. He briefly left his firearm unattended on the couch due to his excitement over a touchdown, according to a police report.
Medical Care:
Serenity was rushed to Homestead Hospital and later transferred to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where she underwent surgery. Officials reported that efforts were being made to save her finger, with Fuller expressing hope that the blood flow would return.
Fortunately, Serenity has been released from the hospital and is said to be in good spirits.
Legal Consequences:
Orlando Young was arrested on a charge of child neglect with bodily harm. Additionally, he faces further charges for getting into a fight with an inmate, as reported by the outlet.
This alarming incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of firearm safety and responsible gun ownership, particularly in homes with children.
