In a recent development, the Anambra State Government successfully rescued a 19-year-old girl who was reportedly gang-raped by six boys in Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area. The State’s Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, confirmed the rescue and informed the press that all the suspects have been apprehended.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Afam Ezenwa (17), Chijioke Ifeanyi (20), Collins Obadom (18), Abuchi Okechukwu (16), Chima Obiekezie, and Sunday Okafor (27). The case has been transferred to the state criminal investigative department of the Police for further investigation.
Expressing her concern about the rising crime rate among delinquents, Commissioner Obinabo called upon parents and guardians to prioritize the upbringing of their children and wards. She assured the survivor and her family that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration would ensure that justice is served, serving as a deterrent to potential criminals.
Recounting her harrowing ordeal, the survivor narrated that she had visited her maternal home in Oramaetiti, Anam, where she was ambushed by a group of boys. They forcibly took her to a room and took turns raping her. Shockingly, one of the assailants filmed the horrific act while it was taking place.
“On my way home, I was accosted by another group of boys who harassed me and coerced me into giving them my underwear, threatening to kill me if I didn’t comply,” she added. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan eventually took her to her parents’ house after she disclosed what had happened to her.
Speaking anonymously, the mother of the survivor revealed that her daughter is the third victim of the rape suspects in the area. She pleaded with the state government not to take the matter lightly, stressing that her daughter’s life is in danger, particularly since her underwear has not yet been retrieved.
The Anambra State Government is taking this matter seriously, and with the support of law enforcement agencies, they are committed to ensuring that the perpetrators face the full extent of the law.
