NFL insider hints at Vikings taking calls on J.J. McCarthy

August 25, 2026

Kyler Murray is officially the Minnesota Vikings‘ starting quarterback. The writing was on the wall when the signing was announced, and it has come true. Now that the dust has settled on the starting job, where does this leave J.J. McCarthy? According to one NFL analyst, Minnesota could already be fielding calls for the former Michigan Wolverine.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said the front office has already been taking calls about McCarthy’s availability, since he may not even be the full-time backup. Reports from Eagan, Minnesota, the site of Vikings training camp, say McCarthy could be battling for the QB2 job with Carson Wentz.

The timing of a potential McCarthy trade will indicate how the front office views Murray. If we see a trade take place before the season begins, or early in the season, the franchise clearly sees Murray as the future. In terms of package or teams, we could see a QB-needy team like the Jets, Browns, or Atlanta make a move to see if he can start right away.

Or, a team with an aging vet or even a lack of success with their current starter, like Philadelphia, Tampa, Detroit, or maybe the Chargers/Michigan reunion could take place.
