It was a record-breaking week in area sports on the softball diamond and with track and field’s postseason arriving.
But which performances stood above the rest?
That’s up for you to decide in this week’s Ivy Tech Journal & Courier Athlete of the Week polls.
Below are the nominees and votes for the period between May 18-23
Fans and readers can vote an unlimited amount of times until Friday at noon. Winners will be announced on Saturday morning.
∎ Zion Clopton, Harrison, track: Clopton broke a 27-year-old 110-meter high hurdles sectional record with a winning time of 13.96 seconds at the West Lafayette Sectional. Clopton also was victorious in the 300-meter hurdles and as a member of Harrison’s 400 relay team, helping the Raiders win the team title.
∎ Owen Hudspith, Frankfort, track and field: Hudspith defended his pole vault sectional championship at Lafayette Jeff with a sectional record height of 15 feet. Hudspith is the top seed for Thursday’s Lafayette Jeff Regional after just missing the podium at last year’s IHSAA state finals meet.
∎ Ethan Landess West Lafayette, track: Landess broke the West Lafayette school record in the 200 meters with a winning time of 22.06 seconds during the sectional meet. Landess added two more sectional victories, winning the 100 meters in 10.96 seconds and as a member of West Side’s 1,600 relay.
∎ Matthew Oakley, McCutcheon, golf: During a rain-shortened Sagamore Conference meet at Coyote Crossing, the sophomore earned medalist honors with a nine-hole round of 37.
∎ Ashley Caplinger, Faith Christian, track: Caplinger smashed a sectional record in the 800 meters at West Lafayette, winning the race in 2:14.84. Caplinger also anchored the Eagles’ sectional championship 1,600 relay team.
∎ Madyson Isley, Carroll, softball: Isley had four hits during the Hoosier Heartland Conference tournament and drove in four runs while scoring four herself. Isley’s home run in the top of the seventh of the championship game against Rossville helped the Cougars rally from a 4-0 deficit to win the league title.
∎ Grace Luck, Tri-County, softball: Luck broke single-season Cavalier records for stolen bases (37), runs (50) and hits (50) during a win over Winamac.
∎ Lainie Serie, Seeger, softball: Serie went 7-for-10 over three games, drilling four home runs and driving in 11 while also scoring seven runs.
