Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday paid a condolence visit to Kebbi State following recent attacks in parts of the state and the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman-Zuru.
Shettima, who visited the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, conveyed the sympathy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Governor Nasir Idris, families of slain security personnel, and the people of the state.
He also condoled with the state government over the death of the Speaker, recalling that he died on April 6 in a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, after a prolonged illness.
The vice president said he was in the state on the directive of the president to commiserate with the government and residents over the incidents.
“We are here to express our condolences to the families of the security personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as over the death of the speaker,” he said.
He described the attacks in Shanga Local Government Area and the killing of security personnel in Giron Masa as tragic, adding that the Federal Government stands in solidarity with the state.
Shettima also said officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, were part of the delegation to support affected communities.
Responding, Idris thanked the president for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of support for the state during a difficult period.
The governor said about 11 persons, including security personnel, were killed in an ambush while responding to a distress call in Shanga Local Government Area.
He also disclosed that the state government had provided financial support to victims of the attacks and families of the deceased.
