Court fixes May 18 for hearing of PDP nomination dispute in Rivers

April 14, 2026

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has adjourned proceedings in a suit filed by three aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, fixing May 18, 2026, for the hearing of an originating summons alongside all pending motions.

The case is against the Rivers State PDP chairman, Aaron Chukwuemeka, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, the PDP, and the Government of Rivers State, over the nomination of candidates for chairmanship, vice chairmanship, and councillorship positions in August 30, 2025 local government elections in the state.

Also listed as defendants in the suit are the chairmen of Obio-Akpor, Port Harcourt City, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government areas, as well as their respective vice chairmen and councillors.

Presiding judge, Justice Stephen Jumbo, adjourned the matter after lawyers representing the different parties raised concerns about gaps in the service and response to some of the court processes.

The claimants, Enyi Uchechukwu, Wisdom Kalio, and Uche Amadi, are asking the court to determine whether the Aaron Chukwuemeka-led state executive, whose congresses had previously been nullified, still has the legal authority to forward a list of candidates to the electoral commission for the local government elections just concluded.

They are also seeking a declaration on whether the PDP validly nominated candidates through Chukwuemeka for the August 30, 2025 council polls.
